property description:  Biologists refer the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo region as the "green paradise" of the Amazon forest. Within this region there exist exceptional national parks and reserves that contain the best wildlife viewing experiences to be found in the Amazon.

The best in northeast Peru is the Reserva Comunal de Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo. The Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo was designated a reserve by the Peruvian government in 1991 to protect the range of the rare red uakari monkey, an orangutan-looking monkey with a bright red face. Subsequent scientific research has found one of the world's richest variety of plants, amphibians, reptiles and birds.

Thought to be a Pleistocene refugia (a zone that remained forested during the last ice age, when most of the Amazon became dry savanna), many species have been found here which exist nowhere else in the world. The reserve's mammal diversity has been proven to be the greatest of any region in all of the Amazon. The number of primate species is the highest of any protected park or reserve in the world. Scientists studying birds, amphibians, and plants have found the respective species assemblages to be "outstanding, unusual and exceptional".

The diversity of other species is also outstanding. Our bird list has 533 species (email us for a copy), including several species that cannot be seen on other tours. Several new species of frogs and butterflies have recently been described here as well.

The reserve is managed with one of the most innovative conservation programs in the Amazon. It is the only program that enlists the collaboration of natives living downriver to subscribe to game management goals set by conservation managers. Fund raising for the conservation program is operated by the
Rainforest Conservation Fund. Amazonia Expeditions is a major financial donor of the Fund as well as working to reinforce the goals of conservation among the local communities.

accommodation:   Amazonia's lodge on the Tahuayo River is rustic, yet comfortable. There are fifteen cabins; some are honeymoon cabins, with a single large bed, others are cabins with two beds and a few are family style cabins with one large bed and several single beds.

The entire lodge is screened and features a dining hall, areas to socialize and relax and a conservation education laboratory with library. There are flush toilets that use a sanitary septic system and showers. There is no electricity except a small generator for re-charging camera batteries. The food is prepared by a culinary staff and is considered by our guests as delicious. Special diets can be entertained with prior notice. We have much experience in sanitary food and water handling and preparation and thus you can eat anything served at the lodge, even salads and unpeeled fruit, items that are not generally recommended for consumption by tourists in South America.

surroundings:  A great variety of activities are offered from our lodge in and around the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve. Examples are swimming with pink dolphins and using a hydrophone to listen to the underwater noises of marine animals, flying through the treetops on a canopy zipline or enjoying the sights of the canopy from treetop platforms, visiting native villages and basketmakers cooperative or having a session with a native shaman, birdwatching, visiting a manakin lek, nature photography, hiking to pygmy marmoset trees, canoeing into hoatzin rookery, visiting the amphibian conservation work in frog valley, etc. Every day your guide will post a variety of day and half day trips you can choose from.

If you wish to do or see something not on the daily itinerary a private guide will be assigned to do this. No extra charge for a private guide or for an itinerary customized according to your pace and interests.

Camping trips in the interior of the reserve, with all gear provided or jungle survival training are also offered for the adventurous traveler, at no extra charge (we recommend an extension of 3-7 days for these adventurous itineraries)

location:  Travel to the lodge requires that you fly into Iquitos, Peru. From Iquitos we take you by boat up the mighty Amazon River, for a distance of about 50 miles, then up the Tahuayo tributary, another 40 miles. The trip takes about 4 hours by our speedboat.
