bushey heath farm
property description: we have been running Bushey Heath Farm since June 2004. Our aim is to develop a thriving smallholder business with a diversity of activities from workshop provision to accommodation for visitors, all with sustainability at the core of the development.
We offer affordable accommodation in our static caravan, Bunk Barns and on our campsite for visitors. We aim to develop the site in an environmentally sensitive way by including as many sustainable ideas and technologies as we find feasible. Presently we encourage recycling throughout the site, collect rainwater for WC flushing and have fitted a Ground Source Heat Pump to provide all the heating and hot water to the barn developments. All our electrical power requirements are sourced from the Proven 6kw turbine that we have had up and running since March 2007. Throughout the construction and renovation work recycled building materials and high levels of insulation have been used where possible.
We presently have a small range of animals, including Suffolk and Swale ewes, a mixed lot of hens that lay well, an old barn with guinea pigs, rabbits and chicks as they arrive. But our present pride and joy are the three male Alpacas from Chile that live in the back field. These are a tester to see if we will move into breeding and raising a herd of Alpacas in the future. In the future we plan to hold art and craft catered workshops and increase the numbers and diversity of animals on the farm. Our two children Thomas and Rebecca also help out on the farm and with the visitor facilities. The farm is close to a number of good hostelries and the supermarkets in Tideswell or Bradwell are minutes away. There are plenty of popular walks from the farm and most of the main attractions of the Peak District are a short drive away. The farm shop sells free range eggs, fair trade snacks, drinks, ices and a selection of vegetarian frozen foods along with Ordanance Survey Maps.
